Whether you are building a new home or just updating your existing one, there are few things you should consider
when looking for dining room light fixtures.
First you should understand that a light fixture can either blend in with the room decor so it is barely
noticed, or they can be a focal point of the decor. You need to decide which you want to do.
Second, the size of dining room light fixtures should be proportional to the size of the dining room table. By
matching the proportions of these two, the room will appear much more pleasing and balanced to the eye. So if you
have a large table that is one of the main focal points in the room you will want a large light fixture too. Don't
fall into the trap of believing that a small light fixture will be more unobtrusive. That is not true, a small
light fixture above a large table will become the focal point simply because the room will no longer be
balanced.
And while we are discussing the size of the light fixture you should never buy a fixture that is wider than the
dining room table. Doing so will overpower the room and bring all attention to the fixture instead of using the
fixture to accent the items in the room. Not to mention that a fixture wider than the table will tend to get bumped
when people stand up after dining.
This next point is counter intuitive to some people too.... A large fixture should have the lights lower to the
table and a smaller fixture should have the lights closer to the ceiling. Again, what you are trying to achieve is
a balance within the room.
Don't be afraid of dining room light fixtures that contain lots of lights. People worry about multiple fixtures
over powering a room but that doesn't have to be the case. Buying a dimmer to control the fixture will allow you to
adjust the amount of light to it's perfect setting for the room. How do you know the perfect setting? If the light
from the dining room light fixture does not look harsh and tends to spread evenly over the table and into the rest
of the room, then you have achieved the perfect lighting conditions for the room.
Your lighting should be pleasing to the eye and at the same time be functional. Remember that you don't have to
settle for just a single fixture over the dining room table. A couple of wall sconces placed on either side of your
buffet table can add a lot of character to the room. Multiple light fixtures allow you to adjust the lighting to
match the function and mood. The light required for your child to do their homework at the dining room table is a
lot different than the light needed to set the mood for a elegant dinner with friends.
Alternatives for Dining Room Light Fixtures
And as a last suggestion you may be able to use recessed or strip lighting fixtures to provide extra accents to
areas or items you wish to emphasize. If you are considering this type of accent lighting then remember that a
little bit of this type of light can go a long ways. Too much light from a fixture like these can appear quite
harsh. As mentioned above, a dimmer may be necessary to achieve the perfect ambiance you want.
And last, if you decide to use dimmers with your dining room light fixtures, be sure the dimmer is rated to
properly handle the fixtures. You can use a dimmer on dining room light fixtures but you will have to know the
total wattage of the bulbs as well as the type of bulbs used to properly size a dimmer to the fixture.
